We’re in the midst of the Matariki, the Māori New Year, and celebrations are in full swing. With everything from food festivals to music events, these mid-winter festivities have brought a number of exciting events to Auckland, and it’s only fitting that they draw to a close in style. Cue this one of a kind, secret cinema experience that’s set to lure us down to Viaduct Harbour.

The Viaduct has collaborated with filmmaker and renowned storyteller Pita Turei to screen a selection of Turei’s own inspiring documentaries, all chosen due to their nautical, Auckland waterfront themes. Hotu Painu, for example, encompasses the bombing of Greenpeace vessel The Rainbow Warrior while Kupe — Voyaging by the Stars, follows Northland building contractor Hekenukumai ‘Hector’ Busby, as he leads the construction of a double-hulled canoe back to Rarotonga.

Lalele Organic Gelato and  Good Karma Coffee will be on site serving their delicious wares, including a special Kawakawa flavour conceived by Lalele, especially for the event. Fancy something a little more robust? A delicious medley of juicy burgers and cinema snacks will be delivered right to your very own in-cinema bean bag, courtesy of the culinary creatives at Fokker Bros.
