Those who don’t know Tom Scott by name may well know him by voice. Having spun his rapid-fire vocals as part of Home Brew, @Peace, and Young, Gifted and Broke, most recently, the 34-year-old wordsmith has been working on his new project, Avantdale Bowling Club. His first release under this latest moniker is ‘Years Gone By’, a six-minute-long long track that fuses jazz and hip-hop in the most sophisticated way.
Unveiled last week was the accompanying video (below), an equally evolved piece of art created by writer and director Arty Papageorgiou. The short film was shot inside the construction zone that is Auckland’s Saint James Theatre and features three generations of Scott men. There’s something truly seminal about it — a ‘from the ashes’ sentiment that speaks of a genesis that is both musical and familial.
To celebrate the release of this nostalgic and reflective track, Scott has also released a back catalogue called by gone years of over 100 songs on Spotify from across his career. An LP featuring three extra tracks is due out in October.
