The thigh-grazing hemlines and staunch shoulders of the 80s have returned, bringing a soupçon of Studio 54 to every occasion. Perhaps it’s just one way our current obsession with the past is materialising, or perhaps we need to stop ‘looking back’ and rather, acknowledge that the culture of our time is a post-modern assortment of trends and ideologies pulled from preceding decades and lumped onto our doorsteps in a colourful, textural heap.
The 80s has been back in fashion’s favour for a while now, so instead of pretending that we’re returning to a decade we’ve all moved on from — and for good reason — lets categorise the sequinned dresses, camp detailing and bold silhouettes under a new wave of disco and embrace them without having to cite nostalgia.
This a trend that lives for all things hedonistic and extravagant. It revels in fearless choices and unapologetic originality. It might have started in the 80s, but all things considered, I think it’s pretty fitting for the values of today. After all, trends don’t exist in a vacuum.
So whether you were around for original disco or not; whether you recoil at the first sign of a sequin or weave iridescence into your wardrobe as easily as someone would a white Tee, this trend is something we should all be tapping into. It gives us permission to dress with wild abandon, to take risks and to cast aside the restrictive boundaries we put on ourselves to ‘fit in.’ Disco is not dead — it just has a shiny new face.
