Welcome indeed to this new destination eatery in the heart of Grafton.
No secret to the nine-to-fivers in the surrounding Khyber Pass business precinct, Welcome cafe is not what one might expect to find in an otherwise nondescript office building. The spacious interior is warm and inviting, and although it caters to many on-the-go punters, the cafe has capacity to seat more than 60 people both inside and out on its expansive terrace in a stylish yet utilitarian manner.
Predominantly organic but not stiflingly so, these health-conscious operators have thoughtfully prepared the food in a way that transcends the moment of truth when the tasty goods touch your lips. The eggs and meat are always free-range and there’s an emphasis on seasonal produce – with a quarterly menu change taking into consideration the seasons offerings.
On our visit we were seduced by the Avocado Smash, a salute to our favourite superfood combined with the addition of edamame beans and goat’s cheese in a blissfully fresh rendition of avo on toast. The Hot Meatball Sub was gorgeously juicy thanks to the addition of lemon juice and spinach, and everybody’s favourite (Best Ugly) Bagel was served with bananas and ‘rawtella’, a house-made sugar and dairy-free version of Nutella. For the nutrient infatuated there are slow juices on offer, and decent servings of Supreme coffee are being brewed by barista Johathan Wigmore with the help of front of house gents Johnny Hartnett and Ralph Jenner.
This is one new local that we’re happy to welcome to the neighbourhood.
