Scarlett Slimms and Lucky

Mt Eden village's newest asset brings to life a film noir-inspired bar and eatery.

It was never going to be easy to give a steadfast Mt Eden local a facelift that would be widely accepted. Fortunately, the village’s latest instalment, Scarlett Slimms and Lucky, has delivered against the odds – materialising as a slick new gastropub that has elevated the gastronomic echelon of the area with some splendid libations and impressive edible offerings.

The first thing that will be noticed by those familiar with its predecessor, the Eden Cloak Room, is the seemingly more substantial outdoor portico. Having been subject to a more permanent glass encasement, the conservatory-like terrace makes a fresh new statement with an elevated glass roof shrouded by hanging planters. Installing oneself on the retro-green upholstered benches, a Pulp-esque vibe modelled off the film noir movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang becomes evident from the American diner-attired wait staff as well as the characteristic neon-lit sign that dominates the far wall.

What’s most surprising about this newly minted bar however, is the display of culinary aptitude that one might not expect. Exceeding the standard that has been set by many gastropubs we know, Scarlett Slimms and Lucky’s comprehensive menu executes an impressive selection of charcuterie including chorizo, salami, rillettes, salt cured speck, black pudding, seasonal relishes and home-made pickles through to refined mains such as the pork loin accompanied by gnocchi puttanesca and fried capers. Of course, there is the classic choice of fish and chips too, albeit at risk of being outclassed by the crispy skin hapuka served with clams on a bed of pan-fried cabbage and lardons.

Last, but not by any means least, are the alcoholic offerings proffered by this ambient new local. Specialising in all that is gin-based with 28 varieties already lined up behind the bar, we suggest you dabble in one of their specialty ‘forgotten’ cocktails that hark back to the days of classic gin drinks that for some reason have largely ceased to be served. The characteristic ‘shrubs’ use fruit preserved in vinegar and sugar to create flavoursome concoctions such as with the sweet essence of plum, star anise and cloves, if not a clever combination of pineapple and thyme, together with gin and soda.

One thing for sure, is that Scarlett Slimms and her mysterious man Lucky have definitely ignited a new sense of intrigue in the heart of Mt Eden, luring those from surrounding suburbs into the heart of the village with the promise of good times, great drinks and delicious fare.
