The city’s best nightcaps

Autumn’s dark and crisp clime has us lusting after a libation with a little more soul. Seal the deal with our selection of late night tipples that promise to extend your evening in style.

Sloe N’ Steady  from 46 & York
Not many a mixologist is successful in making the iconic negroni any better than it already is, but this rendition changes that. Paying homage to the classic, the concoction combines Sloe gin, house-made rhubarb syrup, Martini Rosso, Campari and orange bitters. The balance is right on point, sweet with a dialled back bitterness, which is good for those who find it to be a polarising characteristic of the original.

Rum Blazer from Matterhorn
A hefty cocktail not for the faint of heart, but perfect for those in need  talented mixologists behind the bar at this inner-city establishment put on quite the show when creating this concoction so make sure you’re watching. At the base, a 16-year-old Cuban rum called Matusalem is impressively flambéed to smooth off the bite of the alcohol before being harmonised with a cigar liqueur (a blend of unique spices), bitters, and finished with the addition of an orange twist.

Elder Sour from City Terrace
For those after a cocktail to refresh the palate after a meal, the Elder Sour at City Terrace is light, invigorating and won’t tip you on your head. The cocktail features succinct yet flavoursome ingredients, including Bombay Sapphire gin, St Germain Elderflower Liqueur, jasmine liqueur (or hibiscus) fresh lemon and an all essential egg white. It’s light and zingy, guaranteeing you end the evening on a high note.

The Prospector from Coley & Punch
This new dedicated cocktail bar is serving an aromatic concoction that will satiate any late night desires. Strong and complex, this drink is comprised of Maker’s Mark bourbon, Amaro Averna (an Italian liqueur), Pedro Ximénez sherry and a dash of bitters, topped with homemade brandied cherry. There are soothing notes of spice, orange and honey, a comforting combo that’s been known to encourage a good night’s rest.

Judy Garland from The Jefferson
Our favourite inner-city whisky den plays on the childhood favourite of milk and cereal. Named Judy Garland, it is crafted from Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur, J&B Rare Scotch Whisky, and of course, milk. While we usually start the day on a similar note, (yet without booze), cereal and milk is also said to be a calming midnight snack that aids with sleeping, so this cocktail is suitably garnished with cornflakes.

Arnaud Martini from Gin Room
Named after the French pre-war pianist, singer and actress Yvonne Arnaud, this sophisticated nightcap brings the dry elements of a martini and unites them with the blackcurrant sweetness of Creme de Cassis. The cocktail maestros at this Vulcan Lane specialty gin haunt make their rendition with The West Winds Sabre gin, Noilly Prat vermouth, a rich coffee liqueur, and a dash of orange bitters. Ideal for those who’re after a smooth post-dinner treat.
