Small But Mighty

Of the opinion that Melbourne’s relatively flat topography has enabled Australians to occupy homes that are far bigger than they require, Austin Maynard Architects created THAT House. With that said, this is not a small home. It is merely a house that is conscious of its footprint, endeavouring to use almost half of the floor area of its neighbours without sacrificing on spatial types, function or quality. With good design and planning, modest sized home don’t have to compromise. Better yet, the home has been optimised for sustainability with passive solar gain from its north facing windows. High-performance insulation is everywhere and all windows are double glazed. And as if that wasn’t impressive enough, a large water tank has been buried within the rear yard so all roof water can be captured and reused to flush toilets and water the garden.
