With Bates Masi Architects in the driver’s seat, we knew this Montauk home, set in a rugged area neighbouring The Hamptons, would set itself stylishly apart from the other homes dotted around the small seaside community it resides in. Made to withstand the unpredictable weather — banks of heavy fog and gusty winds — the home embodies what the clients wanted: a structure that would capture the ‘Spirit of Montauk’ and play to the unique characteristics of the area, paying homage to the radar tower and bunkers scattered throughout the landscape. And while our modern times often sees the identity of a place lost, depriving future generations of its charm, this is one project that explores the region it’s in, to showcase an evolution that hasn’t, not even for a second, sacrificed sight of its roots.
