Meet the must-have sweater of the moment (and the designer behind it)

Channel the spirit of our most beloved femme icons

Fashion designer Bella Freud was born in London and studied in Rome. In spite of her fame and cult celebrity following — fans of her work include Alexa Chung, Laura Bailey and Kate Moss — her life’s credentials are at risk of being overshadowed by her lineage. She is, after all, the daughter of Bernardine Coverley and artist Lucian Freud as well as great-granddaughter of the inventor of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, as Google clearly points out when we search her name.

Nevertheless, this 21st-century member of the Freud clan is renowned for her super-chic, signature sweaters. In particular, her 100% Merino wool crew neck jumper emblazoned with a ‘1970’ intarsia, has garnered nothing less than cult status amongst the world’s fashion authority. The designer explains of her piece, “While messing around on my photocopier I spied the date 1970 printed in the corner of a page of the book I was leafing through. Inspirited, I kept blowing it up, then cut it out and pinned it onto my black jumper. It had a rough charm that made me think of the early New York punk scene in the 70s, and Patti Smith.”

Channeling the spirit of our most beloved femme icons, Bella Freud’s statement pullover, along with several of her other coveted designs (including the ‘je t’aime’ sweater), are available at Workshop Newmarket and Ponsonby and online now.
