From Lagerfeld to Louboutin, the daring re-imagining of the LV insignia has landed.
Since Georges Vuitton created and patented the ‘LV’ monogram, featuring his father’s initials, decorated with quatrefoils and four-petal flowers, the insignia has endured 160 years of incredible success as one of the world’s most widely recognised brands. To celebrate such a legendary legacy the fashion house have invited six creative geniuses to offer their interpretation of the emblematic status and traveling heritage of this revered fashion powerhouse.
The result is a striking series of creations, that playfully distinguish the unique signature of its creator while seamlessly integrating the ever-identifiable monogram. Always up for a fight – of the couturier kind of course – Chanel and Fendi’s Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld’s collection showcases his combatant spirit with his Punching Bag, Suitcase and Trunk. Featuring chain and leather handles, these pieces have been designed for more than adoration, complete with punching gloves in monogram canvas, a boxing mat and optional 12 Monogram flower iron weights.
Australian born industrial designer and Apple collaborator, Marc Newson took a more casual yet striking, utilitarian approach. Featuring his signature strap adjusters, Newson has created a show-stopping backpack crafted in monogram canvas and blue, beige or orange shearling. Meanwhile, fashion designer and founder of Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo conceived the Bag with Holes – a burned out tote that reveals the bag’s inner lining was her poetic take on the Sac Plat. Award winning Canadian-American Architect Frank Gehry designed a rectangular box, quite literally, with a twist. The Twisted Box also features a hand drawn insignia design embossed onto the blue lambskin interior.
It comes as no surprise that photographer, performance artist and filmmaker, Cindy Sherman envisioned the Camera Messenger bag and The Studio in a Trunk vanity in bright hues inspired by her pet parrot. Her collection also features original embroidered travel stamps from unreal destinations plucked from her whimsical imagination. And last but not by any means least, stiletto visionary Christian Louboutin’s Classic Caddy, Shopping Bag and Shopping Trolley were all accented with the same scarlet that adorns the soles of each pair of his shoes.
As part of the Louis Vuitton’s ‘Celebrating Monogram’ collaboration with six art and design legends – titled The Icon and the Iconoclasts, a limited number of these bags will be available locally from the 15th of October. Those keen to get their hands on one of these coveted collectors items can secure the: Frank Gehry’s small trunk, Rei Kawakubo’s Bag with Holes, Christian Louboutin’s City Bag, Karl Lagerfeld’s large Punching Bag as well as Marc Newson’s backpacks from local Louis Vuitton boutiques.
