Last year, the widely embraced micro-sunglasses trend paved the way for a ‘mini’ movement and facilitated the cult popularity of pieces like Jacquemus’ tiny handbag (it couldn’t even accommodate a phone). Whether it was the fascinating impracticality of it all that drew us in or a collective subconscious need for sartorial simplicity, it’s ‘trendy’ nature (more timely, less timeless) has resulted in a swing to the other extreme.
Increasingly, one-size-up tailoring, oversized accessories and a new breed of billowy bags have emerged as the antitheses to ‘micro’, as we return to a more literal understanding of making a ‘statement.’
At the risk of sounding like a slave to fickle trends, this move of embracing the oversized look feels more universal and is, really, an aesthetic perfectly suited to the warmer season. The wide-brimmed hat, for example, is emerging as a must-have for more than just its practical merits, with labels like Zimmermann, Gucci, and Dior all offering their own take on the style. Breezy silhouettes that were once relegated to cruise-ship enthusiasts and retirees have taken on new life among sunkissed aesthetes for their simple elegance and unprecedented comfort. And if you’re planning on spending days at the beach this summer, a gigantic bag in which to transport the essentials (including a small beach umbrella if you wish) will quickly become your best friend.
