5 great things to do this weekend

The weather is fine (well, for the moment) and there’s that festive feeling of impending emancipation in the air. As such, we’ve rounded up a medley of activities to keep you occupied this weekend. Whether you fancy eating your body weight in delicious street food, throwing yourself headfirst into seasonal theatrics, or staying tucked up in bed with your laptop, we can certifiably say we have something for everybody.

Night Noodle Markets
Back for its fourth year running, the night noodle market is set to be better than ever. In pursuit of the mouth-watering tastes of Asia, visitors to Vic Park can revel in live entertainment and an array of Eastern flavours from top-notch international and local stallholders. As well as fan-favourites Hoy Pinoy and Gelato Messina, Bangkok Street Thai and Bao Brother’s Eatery are joining the line-up of international vendors to bring fresh and exciting dishes (think fusion dumplings, fresh-off-the-grill BBQ skewers, poké bowls, delicious eastern desserts and much more) to Auckland. Free entry, 23rd November to 2nd December, Victoria Park.

Red Bull Fresh Produce – Straight from the Studio
For this weekend only, a selection of handpicked artworks from new and emerging artists will be on display for purchase at Red Bull’s Grey Lynn HQ. Curated by producers Shea O’Neil (Sideroom.com) and Ross Liew (Cut Collective), the works have been sourced by their respective, extensive networks and will be the perfect opportunity to get some Christmas presents sorted early. Free entry, 24th & 25th of November, Red Bull HQ, 27 Mackelvie Street, Grey Lynn.

Shop the Black Friday Sales
We might not be running around ‘giving thanks’, but we sure as hell can get on board with a bit of retail therapy. Offshore retail outlets are doing their bit but so too are local ones including Workshop with 20% off all Helen Cherry and Workshop Denim, Paris Georgia, with 30% of everything, and Deadly Ponies, who will have a limited number of the Mr Mini Tulip (in black, of course!) available to order exclusively in-store and online. The shoe sensationalists at Scarpa, are also offering 20% off everything for a short time only.

Here Lies Love
For those who want to mix things up and dabble in a bit of song and dance, this amazing cabaret experience, based on David Byrne and Fatboy Slims’ ‘revolutionary’ concept album of the same name, kicks off this weekend. Starring Jennifer Ward Leland, Ria Hall Here Lies Love is set to be the theatrical night out of the party season. From 22nd November, Q Theatre.

Go and see Steve McQueen’s New Movie ‘Widows’
Steve McQueen, aka the Oscar-winning director behind 12 Years a Slave, has teamed up with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn to write and direct this high-intensity, female-led thriller based on the 1983 TV series. Set in contemporary Chicago in times of turmoil, a group of women including Viola Davis and Michelle Rodriquez, are bound by the common thread that is the debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities. As they take the reigns in a bid to turn their unfavourable fate around, you’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat more than once. In cinemas now.
