Jojo Rabbit

Stuck for plans this weekend? Here’s how to spend your time over the next few days

From monumental stage shows to delicious food and musical throwbacks, here are 6 of the best things to do in Auckland this weekend.

Watch Les Misérables at The Civic
A time-honoured, treasured classic, the story of Les Misérables is one that everybody should experience at least once in their lifetimes. Auckland’s iteration of the majestic theatrical show has incredible new staging, glorious reimagined scenery and a plethora of fine, acting talent. Be warned though, even the most apathetic of people are likely to shed a tear — so take tissues.

Cheers to the weekend at The Culpeper’s Garden Party
The Culpeper is gearing us up for the silly season with a delightful springtime prelude: a weekly garden party, dedicated to gin. For the whole month of November, Bombay Sapphire is taking up residence with a special cocktail menu, garnish stations, and happy hour from 4pm until 7pm every day (the specially-curated Bombay Sapphire cocktails will be just $10). This Saturday sees resident DJs Phoebe Carr and Rose Alice putting on a party from 12pm until 4pm, making it the perfect place to kickstart your Saturday evening.

Visit an unlikely art spot
We’re sure you’re well up to date with all the happenings going on at the more well-established galleries, (i.e the incredible Denmark Design currently showcasing at the Auckland Art Gallery) but we bet you’re not at all familiar with the cool, underground art scene that’s currently gaining popularity amongst Auckland creatives. If you’re yearning for something a little left-field, we suggest you check out these little-known galleries, they definitely deliver an experience.

Watch Jojo Rabbit at the cinema
If you haven’t yet seen Taika Waititi’s latest film, then we suggest you make room for it pronto. We suspect it won’t be too long before you find yourself embroiled in a conversation about the moving cinematic satire and we wouldn’t want you to look behind the times — how embarrassing.

Enjoy a bite of history at Fitzroy Lounge Bar
In a bittersweet move, beloved pizza joint Il Buco has been resurrected, but only temporarily, in the form of a short-lived pop-up housed in Fitzroy Lounge bar. Fans of the establishment’s delicious pizza only have until the 22nd December to indulge in a slice — so this weekend marks the perfect time to grab a bite before it goes.

Stay at home, and listen to a podcast
If all else fails, or if the weather turns inclement, (the past week is enough to make us distrust the ever-changing forecast) we suggest you set up a cosy and comfortable space indoors, kick back and relax to the sounds of a fantastic podcast. Be sure to consult our broad round-up here — whether you are a true crime fan or a lover of celebrity interviews, you can rest assured you will find something to tune into.
