The First Monday in May
Crazy About Tiffany’s
Casablancas: The Man Who Loved Women

Lovers of all things fashion-related need to watch these 3 documentaries

This month on Rialto Channel, New Zealand fashion designer Adrian Hailwood presents Icons of Stylea series of documentaries that tell the stories behind some of the biggest brands and personalities in the fashion industry.

Crazy About Tiffany’s
Premiering: Wednesday 12th July, 8.30pm
Regardless of whether you’ve ever been given a blue box wrapped in white ribbon or not, you know where it’s from; the iconic jewellery store Tiffany’s. This documentary by director Matthew Miele glosses over the origins of the original New York Tiffany’s store and its clever brand development, as well as talking to celebrities and stylists about their collections and what it means to wear Tiffany’s. A quick shot of a diamond mine or two reminds us of the conversations not being had in this movie, but lovers of New York and this famous landmark will enjoy.

Casablancas: The Man Who Loved Women
Premiering: Wednesday 19th July, 8.30pm
A few years before John Casablancas, the founder of the global powerhouse Elite Model Management passed away in 2013 at the age of 70, he sat down with director Hubert Woroniecki and spoke about his life. This one on one interview, along with archive footage, photographs and material from Casablancas personal archives are used to piece Casablancas’ story together – and it’s a story that’s almost too good to be true. A privileged, handsome young man uses his family money and name to become a world famous model agent and incredibly successful businessman. Something tells me this story would have been truly fabulous if it wasn’t just John’s side of the story, but you won’t hear a more ‘fashion industry’ yarn than this one.

The First Monday in May
Premiering: Wednesday 26th July, 8.30pm
Is fashion art? Does it belong at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York? These are the questions Anna Wintour throws to the audience in the first minutes of this documentary about one of the biggest events in the fashion world: The Met Gala. Director Andrew Rossi (Page One: Inside the New York Times) answers these questions very much in the affirmative by taking us behind the scenes of the Met Costume Institute’s 2015 special exhibition, China: Through The Looking Glass. Museum and fashion lovers will lap up this glossy and entertaining peek into the Gala; while fashionistas will appreciate the slow-motion red carpet footage that captures celebrities and their stunning outfits.
