Mulan
The release of Mulan — the latest in a string of Disney live-action remakes — is finally upon us and it’s showcasing a dazzling display of fine, homegrown talent. Not only is it directed by Kiwi filmmaker Niki Caro — with much of the filming taking place on home soil in the Waikato district — but Auckland Graffiti actor Yoson An will be playing Chen Honghui, Mulan’s love interest.

Homegrown singer-songwriter Aldous Harding is returning home, with an all-encompassing New Zealand tour to boot. Joined by fellow indie artists Weyes Blood and Purple Pilgrims, the jamp-packed evening is sure to be one that won’t disappoint.

Ex-pat New Zealander Sir Garfield Todd, as the Prime Minister of Rhodesia in 1958, became an opponent of white minority rule before being ousted from politics for being a “black lover.” Todd’s ongoing fight for racial equality and opposition to white minority rule led to his house arrest in 1965, the starting point for this story by award-winning playwright Stanley Makuwe. His play, Black Lover, brings to life this iconic New Zealander.

He’s the rapper who has written songs for Usher, Gorgon City, Kiesza and Nico & Vinz, opened for Post Malone on tour and has even been given the seal of approval by Beyonce — having co-written and performed alongside Blue Ivy on her track ‘Brown Skin Girl.’ Needless to say, he is the up-and-coming rapper who is on everybody’s lips, and his imminent arrival is sure to excite Auckland fans.
