A world-class sculpture park, Sculptureum, is luring us to Matakana

Matakana welcomes its very own world-class sculpture park.

We’ve always known Matakana to be one of those townships with a disproportionate interest in the arts, but a newfound destination designed for cultural enlightenment is taking things to the next level. Located on the well-trodden route to Omaha, a new sculpture park (and soon to be dining destination) Sculptureum, is making waves for its unprecedented display of world-class art.

No less than 12 years in the making, the couple behind the unique development are Auckland-based lawyers Anthony and Sandra Grant who hope “the array of artistic creativity on display will amuse, inspire and stimulate” their visitors. Having spent even longer procuring the pieces that are now in situ, the cultural Garden of Eden boasts three gardens abounding with works by Cezanne, Monet, Chagall, Rodin and others; animal sculptures by artists from all over the world and more contemporary works in plastic and alternative materials. The magnum opus, however, has to be the fiery blown glass chandelier by famous American artist Dale Chihuly — the most substantial work of glass art on public display in Australasia.

Further to the other-worldly gardens there are six galleries, a vineyard, function centre and the aptly titled bar and restaurant, Rothko — the perfect place to indulge in a glass of Sculptureum’s award-winning wine, and soon, a menu of enticing daytime dishes. Given the unparalleled status of this game-changing new art haven, we’re champing at the bit to lay eyes on such a hedonistic collection.

Open Thursday through Monday, 9am-3pm (with Rothko opening at 11am), tickets can be purchased from the website.
