Last week, what is set to become an iconic Auckland entertainment offering, City of 100 Lovers, launched at SKYCITY Theatre. The multi-million dollar production is, in every way, a marker of our growing up as a multi-faceted, artistic city and it tells a tale about our people, our culture, our city and our land.
The story, whose concept was created by bestselling NZ author Justin Brown and American Tony Award nominee Peter Kellog, follows the intrepid journey of a newly divorced food critic, Sally, from NYC who is asked to judge a cooking contest in Auckland, aka the City of 100 Lovers. Knowing nothing about fair Tāmaki Makaurau and expecting only to be disappointed, she is taken by surprise when her charming Maori tour guide TJ steps in and a veritable exploration of Auckland in all its multicultural glory ensues.
It’s a funny, feel-good, rollicking spectacle enhanced by an international cast and various technical features; with hundreds of split second cues with projections, music and lighting; every scene, song and moment has been tweaked and refined with the aim of making the 80-minute show both entertaining and engaging.
With some sessions already selling out, we suggest you get your tickets to what is arguably the most important stage show of the year STAT.
To celebrate the launch of City of 100 Lover, Denizen is giving away a double pass to the show and a night’s accommodation at SKYCITY Grand. To enter, click here.
