Multitalented design

These slick new multitasking furniture pieces are finally available in NZ.

When we first came across Stellar Works’ Valet Bar Cart recently, our attention was captured. Vintage-inspired yet distinctly modern, the portable booze bar sufficiently whet our appetite for the Shanghai-based design firm’s aesthetic and led us to the risky discovery that the full collection is now available on our shores.

A contemporary brand inspired by the craft of traditional cultures and Asian aesthetics, Stellar Works is renowned for its far-reaching collaborations that have seen its pieces scattered from Noma Copenhagen to SoHo’s 11 Howard hotel. Our beloved Valet, a 14-piece collection that fuses purpose with design came to life through one such creative partnership with American architect David Rockwell. Employing powder coated steel, walnut leather, brushed brass and luxurious embellishments across the range, Valet even wraps one of its seats in wood laminate and still has us wanting — the sign of true design success.

Rockwell describes the pieces as ‘subtle tools of living well’, with each exploring the idea of multifunctionality. The leaning Valet Stand would perhaps be our favourite example of such usefulness, combining a coat rack, mirror, shoe holder and key shelf in one, to make for a smoother transition from home to street.

Available now at Backhouse Design, Valet is just one of many Stellar Works collections set to hit the Parnell store. Dangerously must-haveable, it’s all the inspiration we need to do a little home sprucing…
