Asahi Black and Azabu’s famous lamb chuleta make the gastronomic match of the season

Fire, ice and the thirst-quenching ability of a cold lager collide at Azabu.

While a frosty cold lager is a suitable reward for strenuous activities undertaken on a hot summer’s day, there’s no reason not to tap into the same gratification from a darker shade of beer in the cooler months ahead. Luckily for us, we have our sights set on a lip- smacking coupling at one of Ponsonby’s favourite eateries, Azabu. Superbly brewed to deliver unrivalled flavour, Asahi Black is made using roasted malt in the brewing process — hence, its darker appearance.

Boasting more caramel notes than your regular lager, it has been specifically designed as a beer to pair with all food and is particularly harmonious with meat dishes such as Azabu’s longtime favourite, lamb chuleta. Having featured on the renowned restaurant’s menu since its opening, the order boasts tender lamb cutlets dusted with cumin, ginger, garlic and shichimi (a common Japanese seasoning known as seven spice). Sitting on a bed of smoked aubergine and coriander purée, the combined effect is one that is slightly spicy and altogether delightful.

Pair these piquant characteristics, as one might traditionally do, with the cooling quality of a fresh draught beer, and you have the most satiating combination since Champagne and oysters. A little bit fire, a little bit ice, we’d say Asahi Black and lamb could just be our go-to winter combo of choice.
