Food mash-ups might sometimes be contentious, but they often result in some pretty delicious culinary inventions. Case in point: the collaboration between Hero Sandwich House and Baby G Burger. Tomorrow will see Baby G founders Cam Blanchard and Greta Gregory set up shop for the day at Hero’s Airedale Street café, where they’ll be serving sandwich-fied versions of their sell-out smash patty burger.
The collaboration marks the first iteration of Hero Saturdays, a regular pop-up event organised by Hero founder Huri Neill to showcase inventive sandwich specials by some of his friends and peers. “I just like the idea of having all my friends down to make sandwiches, and for Auckland to have a little sandwich bible of sorts,” he told us. “I think it’ll be awesome to see some of Auckland’s best cooks and then some everyday people make their favourite sandwich — and how they compare.”
Hero Saturdays are planned to occur every two weeks at this stage, involving an eclectic mix of people from musicians and rappers to artists and more. At the end of the year, he says, hopefully he can put together a book of everyone’s recipes, providing a delightful collector’s item for sandwich lovers.
The Hero X Baby G sandwich looks set to have all the flavours we know and love from Baby G’s burger pop-ups — smash patty, melted cheese, delicious sauce — and there will be a condensed Hero menu running too. On from 10am until 2pm or sold out, we have three words of advice: get in quick.
