If you hadn’t noticed, poké is a having a bit of a moment. The reason is obvious: the fresh, Hawaiian delicacy — in its salad-y bowl form — is something we can scoff without fear of passing out from a carbohydrate-induced coma an hour after consuming it. For this reason, it has become a lunchtime go-to and there is a plentitude of poké-centric pit-stops to show for it, Blu Poké Shed being one of them.

Opening for the first time today in the new industrial complex on Rosedale’s Apollo Drive, the soothing eatery is the brainchild of ex-mechanical engineer Nicholas Chang. Working with a team of friends (and his wife Jane) on the building and branding, the result is a relaxed vibe that temporarily transports you to Maui. When asked what instigated the career one-eighty, Chang explains simply: “There’s an instant gratification that comes from providing people with good food.” Not so in engineering, it would seem.

Serving up variations of the classic poké — Blu’s Signature features tuna or salmon with fresh mango, edamame, macadamia, seaweed salad and sriracha mayo — alongside a delicious chicken iteration (Rambo chicken) with pineapple and satay sauce, each colourful dish is as appealing as the next. Only a drinks cabinet detracts from the main event with cold brew coffee soon to be on offer. Fair to say, we can foresee this becoming a popular destination for a delicious and nutritious lunch.

Oh, and if you were wondering about the name, Blu is the couple’s fur baby, a Border Collie x Husky. Their other pup, Rambo, is also enshrined on the menu (in the aforementioned chicken dish).
