Cafes by Night: 7 eateries you wouldn’t expect to be open for dinner

The evolution of the all-day eatery has been dubbed by some, including San Francisco’s Eater, as one of the biggest breakout trends of recent times. And it’s fair to say the phenomenon has taken hold in Auckland as upmarket cafes extend their offering into the evening, and in doing so, capitalise on the ever-growing demand for fast-casual dining. The following is but a handful of our favourite places that are seeing guests enjoy a full-service experience come nightfall.

Simon & Lee
Parnell eatery Simon & Lee is the unlikely destination e
ncouraging us to get stuck into a hot ‘n’ spicy dinner of Korean Fried Chicken. Featuring on their dinner menu alongside decidedly delicious bibimbaps and so much more, we guarantee this sticky, crunchy delicacy is unlike anything you’ve ever tried. NB: plastic gloves are supplied. (Available Thursday through Saturday.)

Williams
Having newly opened for dinner from Wednesday through Saturday, this Wynyard Quarter resident is making an excellent case for the casual yet elevated dinner. With starters like plump and juicy Kaipara oysters, delish lamb dumplings and an incredible salmon tartare, things only get better with mains that draw from Japanese and Scandinavian influences.

The Candy Shop
It’s hard to pinpoint why, but Newmarket can be a fickle place to dine at nighttime. Thankfully, Osbourne Lane’s The Candy Shop is the perfect place to settle in for a delicious, Asian-infused meal. Think duck bao and eggplant fries in a pleasingly contemporary setting.

& Sushi
We raised our arms for a “hallelujah” when &Sushi officially announced it would be opening for dinner. Their delicious donburis and steaming hot udon bowls are brimming with goodness, available at Newmarket on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Rude Boy
Proffering scrumptious schnitzel sandwiches (available without the bread) and other soul-warming dishes, new Sale St. resident Rude Boy has been shaking things up with its dinner service, available Thursday through Saturday.

Ampersand
A firm favourite amongst those who regularly visit Orakei Bay Village, this all-day eatery flourishes at night where, from Wednesday to Sunday, they dish up ricotta gnocchi with smoked duck, lentil and sunflower seed risotto, and house fries with truffle oil and a mountain of Parmesan. We needn’t say more.

The Parkhouse
Whenuapai’s notable new resident, The Parkhouse, is putting its pizza oven to good use for a new dinner service. Furthering an adeptness for healthy, homely, yet sophisticated food, with a cheeky, optional BYO on Thursday nights, head along or book to reserve your spot from 5pm onwards on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays.
