A city can never have too many good Chinese restaurants. Well, at least that’s what we believe here at Denizen. Captivated, after stumbling upon an Instagram video of a man hand-pulling noodles, we endeavoured to find out more about a fairly new inner-city restaurant called Chamate.
Having opened in April, it’s fair to say the team has since found its stride. The glass-fronted space purports to be an eatery focussed on modern Chinese cuisine with an extensive menu compartmentalised into ‘starters’, ‘noodles’, ‘dim-sum’ (dumplings), ‘Four Seasons’, ‘Chamate Signatures’ and à la carte dishes. Representing cuisines of many different Chinese regions, connoisseurs can expect to find hand-pulled beef noodle soups from Lanzhou, the spicy flavours of Sichuan, Cantonese dim-sums and more delicacies from Xinjiang and Shanghai.
Our subsequent ordering resulted in the sampling of a beef noodle soup, deep fried prawns wrapped in crispy (and yes, hand-pulled) noodles, water boiled fish with sizzling (chilli-laced) oil, and sweet and sour chicken — and we can confirm that it’s utterly delicious. This might have something to do with the fact that their multi-award winning head chef has over 20 years experience and the majority of their dim-sum and noodle chefs have been doing what they do best for 30 years and counting.
The perfect spot for a session of day-after indulgence, if not a casual lunch or gratifying dinner, it would seem Chamate is ready to slot right into our inner-city dining repertoire. If you’re a fan of steaming hot dumplings and tasty noodle soup, consider this your new mecca.
Chamate is open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week.
