Villa Maria Winery

5 city-fringe eateries you should seriously consider visiting this weekend

It’s Friday and the weather is fine, as is the weekend’s forecast, which means no more moping around in our track pants, marathon watching episode after episode of The Handmaid’s Tale. Winter is here and it’s time to deal. So why not buckle up and set your sights on one of these five city-fringe eateries where delicious food and drink awaits.

The Parkhouse
Whenuapai has become a talking point for city-folk thanks to this beautifully transformed new villa eatery. Backing out onto the Whenuapai Settlement Playground, its a perfect place to take the family who will love the healthy, homely yet elevated fare. They’ve just started doing dinner on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays too which means they’ll be firing up that pizza oven all night long. Well, at least till 9pm or so.

Villa Maria’s Vineyard Cafe
Not only is the famed Auckland winery within a very reasonable distance from the city centre, but its lunch game is so strong that a weekend visit will leave you wondering why you don’t head here more often. With a new winter menu and an abundance of wine, say hello to your new weekend favourite.

Grangers
Easily one of East Auckland’s best-kept secrets, Grangers is the Half Moon Bay eatery you need to try. Known to serve an array of sensational cocktails, refreshing Asahi beer, seafood-centric fare, burgers, and a superb Sunday roast complete with Yorkshire pud, there’s little not to like about this charming, harbourside address.

Sawmill Brewery
Okay, so she’s a little further than the ‘city fringe’ but if it’s some gratifying food and delicious craft beer you’re after,  make a beeline for Omaha (or thereabouts). Set up shop within this unassuming yet intriguing roadside barn where you’ll be rewarded with a warm atmosphere, outdoor braziers, an abundance of brews and plenty of soul-warming food.

Fabric
Changing the game for Hobsonville Point’s culinary community, Fabric is set to impress as they find their feet only two weeks after opening. The classic menu features dishes like duck pappardelle, potato gnocchi and market fish crudo, not to mention a few surprises too — think eggs tartare on toast and cheesecake for breakfast. A serene interior, waterfront setting and scrumptious food make this worth the drive.
