Experience Ebisu’s mini makeover and new menu

Come see and sample the Japanese connoisseur's new look and menu.

While we’re all familiar with the ‘if it ain’t broke’ adage, we do believe that little harm can come from a spring spruce up. And so it is that one of our favourite Britomart dining destinations — new-age Japanese stalwart Ebisu — saw fit to subject its space to a refresh, and a smattering of new menu additions to herald and celebrate its fresh, new look.

Leaving the interior to the adept hands of Paul Izzard and his crew, the space boasts a further refinement of its already-impeccable ambience, rather than a complete overhaul — this is the sort of refresh that will see many fans falling in love with Ebisu all over again, without being able to pinpoint specifically why… we can’t say we’re complaining. From the dark timber bar — now wider so you might dine as you perch — to the new booth seating options, the new light fixtures overhead to the sense of spaciousness now that some of the glass panels are no more, what we’re most excited about are the bi-folds that open out onto Quay Street — if anyone needs us come summer, we’ll be here sunning ourselves with a sake in hand.

Making its debut on the menu, The Chatham Islands paua is a feast for the senses. So is the Instagram-worthy ramen sushi roll with prawn, soy paper, cucumber and the seriously delicious chukka dressing. For those after a light bite, the snapper crudo features a medley of white ponzu, shaved fennel and coriander pesto is sure to please. But, it’s the miso-glazed ‘Saikyo’ Tooth Fish and the feather-light tempura waffle keeping it company that has our mouths watering for good reason. Then there’s the epic seared duck breast, basking in a five spice reduction, accompanied by dried figs and pickled pears, and finally, it would be a crime to leave without experiencing the ebi mayo roll where compressed rockmelon meets its match in black tiger prawns and avocado. Sure to draw your mind-blowing meal to a close in a manner only Ebisu knows how, the white chocolate miso fondant with blueberry coulis, chocolate soil and raspberry sorbet will do anything but disappoint.

With the aforementioned giving us every good reason to make our way to Britomart’s very own slice of Japan, we highly recommend you follow suit STAT. To book now, click here.
