Most Aucklanders are aware of the fact that Hobsonville Point has been ‘popping off’, manifesting in an up and coming borough set just far away enough from the big smoke to not be too far. But unlike the staggering number of real estate transactions taking place, quality hospitality offerings have been somewhat slower to arise. Enter Fabric, a refreshing and wholly enticing new waterfront eatery that aims to fill the void, if only fractionally.
Owned and operated by husband and wife duo Luke and Melissa Shore, the couple simply couldn’t resist the former RNZAF building’s potential which has since been ‘carefully updated’ by Willis Bond & Co. and Cheshire Architects. The traditional building has been tastefully softened by a pared-back interior scheme by Walker Mitchell. Beige suede booths and plentiful cushions are complemented by oak furnishings, an eye-catching Italian marble bar, wicker basket lights, and the considered placement of blush-coloured semi-transparent curtains.
Having both been in hospitality their whole careers but never embarking on a venture of their own, for the Shores, Fabric is an opportunity for them to showcase their appreciation and savoir-faire for simple and seasonal dishes. Their chef, Kei Suzaki — who has honed his skills at the lofty likes of Britomart’s Ostro and Josh Emett’s Rata — has helped the couple realise a classic menu comprising dishes like duck pappardelle; a market fish crudo; potato gnocchi with ricotta, forest mushroom, sage and almond burnt butter sauce. While most of the all-day menu keeps to a familiar yet elevated format, there are a few surprises too — think eggs tartare on toast and cheesecake for breakfast.
With its elegant environs beckoning to the people of Hobsonville Point, Fabric is sure to live up to its name in terms of it becoming an important part of the community. With a coffee window serving up steaming hot cups of L’affare brew from 6.30am on weekdays — a handy pitstop for ferry commuters — and the promise of service with a smile all day long, Fabric has even us city-dwellers longing for this newfangled seaside address.
