A serene cafe with a healthy Asain bent — put Glasshouse on your radar.
Recent times have seen a theme emerge, that is of finding cafes in unlikely places. This continues with the addition of Glasshouse to Northcote’s University district. Housed within a new development on Akoranga Drive, the eatery’s name is evidently inspired by its transparent ceiling which allows light to stream into the soothing, foliage-filled space.
The menu offers several types of eggs bene: the ‘Upbeat’ some served on a hearty slab of brioche with either coconut-lemongrass braised pork belly and jalapeño hollandaise, or beetroot-cured salmon with béarnaise. Then there are the classic options to boot, featuring streaky bacon and garlic and mushroom kale. Meanwhile, more exotic items such as the ‘Earthly Feast’ — black rice porridge topped with pear ‘au vin rouge’, dried berries, a drizzle of coconut cream and pistachio crumble — lure us in for a fanciful breakfast.
Lunch might revolve around the Bulgogi pork steamed buns with kimchi while the Thai fish cakes and black sesame tofu embody the offering’s healthy Asian bent. With what is fast becoming the expected line-up of ‘coffee alternatives’: beetroot, turmeric and matcha lattes, Glasshouse ought to be on your North Shore radar.
