A vintage truck that serves gourmet cheese toasties out the back? Praise Cheesus.
For most people, the only thing that can come from combining a 4WD with scorching hot food is a good life lesson. Not when you’re Stephen Kennedy and Yang Yang though. Retrofitting their Series 3 Land Rover with a fully functioning grill, the couple have overcome rational thinking (and we’re glad) to launch Guerrilla Grill, a lean, mean cheese toastie machine.
The pair, who met at culinary school, dreamt up the idea of the literal food truck last year while on holiday. Not wasting any time in bringing the blue beast to life, they called on the experts at Oakden Customs Designs to pimp their ride, while they got experimenting kitchen-side. Testing, tasting and running pop-ups at markets across the city of sails, the pair had a solid year of ‘research’ and what they’ve come down to is some really gouda sandwiches (sorry, had to be done).
Each of the savoury creations starts with the same base; a unique blend of Mercer Cheese’s Maasdam, vintage Gouda and Parmesan slapped between two slices of The Crafty Baker’s white sourdough. From there, things get gourmet as the pair put their tertiary training to fine use, whipping up an ever-changing menu of steaming sarnies. Mushroom, garlic and shallot with truffle oil; smoked fish with green chilli jam; blackened cauliflower, bechamel and garlic butter; and our favourite the ‘cheeseburger’ — these are some serious sammies. With homemade fruit sodas to wash the savoury delights down like the grilled lemonade — a smoky drop made from charred citrus — a stop by the truck is a trip worth making.
Set to premiere the new ride this Friday 14th October at the Te Atatu Night Market, the best way to keep track of the grilled cheese connoisseurs is via their Facebook page. Dishing up gourmet toasties out the back of an old Landy, Guerrilla Grill is definitely one to taleggio your friends about. (Did it again).
