New Windsor’s Hare and the Turtle is doing the best cinnamon scrolls in town

For a relaxed breakfast or lunch, this New Windsor cafe has you covered.

There are a few things a cafe needs to get it ‘right’. Tasty fare, attentive staff and a sense of atmosphere are imperative. And, just because we’re fussy, trendy graphics and branding don’t hurt either. Stopping by New Windsor’s just-opened Hare and the Turtle, it quickly became evident that the relaxed eatery delivers on all fronts.

The breakfast side of the menu is succinct but completely satisfying with three options on offer: muesli, eggs on sourdough and pancakes. Each excellent, made with quality ingredients and attention to detail (the pancakes, for instance, come with grilled banana, mascarpone, and candied nuts), they seamlessly cover your sweet and savoury bases. Far from your only option though, there’s also an eight-strong sandwich selection on offer from opening ’til close.

Whether you’re after something cheesy, meaty, fishy or veggie, there’s a sandwich to suit. The classic ‘G.C’ (grilled cheese) is an easy choice, as is the baloney sarnie which sees traditional Italian Mortadella meat smothered in hot and sticky provolone cheese and tucked inside a house made bun. The more adventurous would do well to give the white fish and remoulade slathered sourdough ‘Smokey Joe’ a go, but really, you can’t go wrong. A stellar menu all round, it has to be said that the real star of the show is shaping up to be the cinnamon buns. Loosely based on the classic American Cinnabon recipe, the sweet wee scrolls have been consistently selling out since the team opened its doors.

The whole thing is just plain cool. From the decor to the owners, the food, the fit out and even the vintage tunes playing over the speakers, Hare and the Turtle gets it rightWith the added bonus of plenty of parking (the type that only comes with being a suburban cafe), it’s super relaxed, and definitely, one to add to your weekend repertoire.
