We discover new flavours within the walls of Federal Street's latest restaurant addition.
There is a tuk-tuk in the entranceway of 1947 Eatery. Right bang smack as you walk in. But aside from that and a couple of pressed aluminium tumblers on the tables, there’s really nothing to suggest that you’re in an Indian restaurant. That’s the point. Started by three friends with the same desire — to serve authentic Indian cuisine in a sleek modern setting — the dimly-lit, leather and wood-lined space delivers on all fronts.
Taking inspiration from all facets of Indian cuisine, be it deep fried street vendor snacks or authentic tandoor meats, the Federal Street restaurant fuses the country’s finest into one spice-addled experience. Leaning heavily on fragrant, traditional flavours, the menu is broken into sections, so whether you feel like stopping in for a quick ‘Bombay Mule’ and a samosa or an ice cold beer and lightly spiced lamb shank curry, you’re covered.
From the coal-heated clay oven, the succulent Tandoori chicken, smothered in a fragrant rub and served on the bone with a lemon and mint sauce is a classic Indian experience, while those more partial to a curry will find the ‘From the Pot’ section of the menu more to their liking. With an eclectic collection of small dishes and snacks too, 1947 offers you the chance to discover some new and delicious Indian dishes. The Dahi Kebab, for instance, a yoghurt, cream cheese, vegetarian patty with kiwifruit relish, is a triumph.
Open from lunch till late, it’s Indian cuisine, but not necessarily as you know it. Innovative menus and an excellent location, we’d suggest you stop by.
