Our prayers have been answered, Westhaven's impressive new cafe is destined to win over both hearts and appetites.
Westhaven Marina is easily one of the most coveted waterfront spots in Auckland, especially with the increase in pedestrian access thanks to the recent construction of the Westhaven Promenade. Given as much, we’ve often wondered why such a desirable destination has lacked an enticing daytime dining destination — one to proffer passers-by with great coffee and delicious brunching options. Thankfully, it appears our prayers have been answered as on a recent stroll, we came face to face with bright new cafe, Buoy.
It’s reassuring to know that the proprietors are more than well-versed in the realm of hospitality. Some will know Ginnette Auld from the frequented Three Lamps cafe Salta, who has more than 30 years experience in the industry having worked at DeBretts in the 80s, owning her own restaurant up north, and for the last 14 years, helming the ever popular Salta. Her new baby ‘Buoy’, however, is clearly a labour of love. Inhabiting one the most pristine spots in the city, it’s a no-brainer that the eatery takes advantage of its position with sliding glass doors that allow for a breezy indoor/outdoor flow. There’s also seating outside, right on the water’s edge, shaded by big white umbrellas. Inside, it is just as warm and welcoming, with its seaside proximity echoed by pops of blue decor and pots of greenery suspended from the ceiling.
The menu at this early stage offers breakfast and lunch, but we’ve been informed that once their liquor licence is sorted, they will be offering a menu to suitably accompany afternoon cum evening drinks. If you find yourself popping in for breakfast, the wholemeal buttermilk crêpes with baked apples, vanilla crème, caramel sauce and toasted walnuts is a winner, as is the potato rosti with watercress, house smoked salmon (like nothing you’ve ever tasted) and fresh tomato salsa. For lunch, we’re opting for the hot roll of beef cheek, cheese, relish and slaw as well as the luscious seafood chowder that’s certainly appropriate for the colder days upon us.
It’s safe to say that we’re more than excited by Westhaven Marina latest resident. Whether dropping by for a coffee on your morning walk or staying a while to enjoy breakfast or lunch, Buoy will be the go-to destination for those who appreciate the ambience just as much as they do the food.
Open 7 days 6am — 6pm.
