For those who reside on the Grey Lynn side of town, you will be elated to know that new café, Honey Bones, is about to become your local. Taking pride of place where Muck Floral once was, owner Hugo Baird (ex-owner of Crumb) has done the corner spot more than justice, transforming it into an impeccable new eatery.

Getting to work on the interior, Baird rallied the boys who popped in after work and on the weekends to help out — from the oak tables with steel framework and the custom made brass lighting to the myriad of takeaway cups and graphics by Lucy Jamieson Design, a Ken Griffen steel sculpture on the wall to the dusty pink, blue and white ceramic tableware — each and every detail has been meticulously thought out.

At the helm in the kitchen is Reginaldo Richard (previously of Odettes Eatery) with a carefully curated menu serving up more than your classic breakfast, brunch and lunch offerings. From the smashed peas — a welcome, and incredibly delectable alternative to avocado on toast — that comes served with ricotta, pickled butternut, roasted grapes and a poached egg on rye, through to the ricotta pancakes with poached fruits, yoghurt, date syrup and hazelnut crumble, it’s a menu we look forward to completing over and over again.

Serving up Supreme coffee (come summertime, you’ll be able to get your morning fix from the coffee window down the side of the building), a succinct smoothie list, and some loose leaf teas, we imagine this coveted corner spot to be constantly bustling with people.
