We've discovered your newest brunching destination where great coffee and outstanding food collide.
When it comes to brunching in Auckland, there are a plethora of well-established spots with their loyal, long list of regulars. It’s not often we see newcomers infiltrate this prestigious circle, but when we do, it’s usually something extra special. Enter our latest discovery, L’affare Melrose, a new daytime eatery tucked away on Melrose Street in Newmarket.
Having opened their flagship Wellington cafe in 1990 and since garnering a cult following, it was about time for the coffee savants to make their way up to the big smoke. The stylish industrial establishment is a result of powerhouse design duo Charlie Nott (of Nott Architects) and Gary Stewart (of The Gas Project) who are also responsible for Al Brown’s famed eateries Depot and Federal Delicatessen. Exposed steel trusses and a black steel staircase that leads up to L’affare’s headquarters give the space a slick edge, while the amalgamation of rich wooden accents and smatterings of brass reintroduce the 26-year-old operation in a more contemporary light.
With the upmarket new space comes a modern menu thanks to head chef Luke Adam’s focus on fresh, vibrant and unadulterated food. If it’s breakfast you’re after, you’re in for a treat. Try the light and satisfying black rice porridge with coconut milk, vanilla yoghurt and mango or the simple yet effective avocado with lime, chilli and pistachio on toast with a poached egg. We were also thrilled to see a perfectly balanced truffle scrambled egg make an appearance on the menu, and if you’re feeling extra indulgent, opt for the freshly shaved truffle on top.
Moving onto lunch, there’s something that will suit every persuasion. For something on the lighter side, the spring citrus salad is heavenly, as is the wild rice bowl with broad beans, pistachio and halloumi. For something with a little more grunt, we suggest you dabble in the truffle chicken wrapped in prosciutto with parsnip purée. And, being the coffee connoisseurs that they are, you are guaranteed to have your caffeine needs more than catered to. Their selection of delicious full-bodied blends and single origins can be tailored according to the type of coffee you order.
So basically, with kick-ass coffee and an excellent menu to boot, this soaring new space is well worth venturing outside your favourite establishments for — don’t worry, you can thank us later.
Opening hours: Monday – Friday 7.30am – 3.30 pm, Saturday 8am – 3 pm, Sunday 9am – 3pm.
