Pop-Up: Very Good Dumplings

We're welcoming the arrival of this salubrious dumpling truck with open arms.

Personally, I don’t think there’s an individual out there who doesn’t love a decent bit of dumpling action. Admittedly, there exist varying calibers of the enshrined oriental delicacy — from the seriously cheap and cheerful helpings proffered at Dominion Road’s Barilla Dumpling, to The Blue Breeze Inn’s refined soup version featuring pork and black truffle — their quality and origin indisputably gives way to how we feel in those moments post-consumption.

Given our zeal for these delicious little parcels, news of a salubrious new dumpling truck has catapulted our excitement levels to a new high. ‘Very Good Dumplings’ are exactly what they say they are; high-quality dumplings inspired by a rich heritage of varieties from around the world. From the classic Japanese Gyoza that envelopes free-range chicken with spring onion, rice malt, ginger and organic tamari dressing to the ‘Pelmeni’, a typical Russian morsel comprising earthy flavours alongside certified organic beef, dressed with a tangy tomato vinaigrette and sour cream. There are also mouth-watering Indian momos and Turkish lamb mantis that are enough to make us weak at the knees.

Fair to say these newfound dumpling purveyors have truly captured the food genre’s international scope. It’s also worth mentioning that they’re doing ‘Very Good Skewers’, cooked on traditional Japanese charcoal grills and served with a fresh seasonal salad. To track them down, you can either pay them a visit while they’re parked up at Cox’s Bay from Wednesday through Friday from 11am – 3pm, or book them in for your next big function. Furthermore, they’re poised to make an appearance at the Grey Lynn markets every second Sunday where we’re more than happy to witness the arrival of such a reputable dumpling truck.
