Dinner and a show? Consult Denizen’s definitive guide to pre-theatre dining

With theatre season well and truly in full swing, we call upon some of Auckland’s most popular theatres and bring you the best, nearby dining destinations.

ASB Waterfront Theatre
Go to: Williams Eatery
With a menu designed for sharing Williams Eatery combines Japanese and Scandinavian influences to offer a line-up of delicious, contemporary New Zealand cuisine. A focus on quality, local ingredients and delicately balanced flavours make this Wynyard Quarter eatery perfect for a fresh, pre-theatre bite that won’t leave you feeling too full.

The Civic
Go to: Culprit
This inner-city institution is primed for the pre- and post-theatre crowd having recently changed their service times to every half-hour. It’s perfect if you’re heading to a show at the Civic (or anywhere downtown for that matter), serving up a refined selection of its renowned European yum-cha-style fare.

Aotea Centre
Go to: Tanuki’s Cave
The epitome of ‘an oldie but a goodie’, head here for a dose of classics like the cabbage with Japanese mayo, an endless array of hot-seared skewers, and an excellent selection of sake. There is a reason it’s been around for so long.

SKYCITY Theatre
Go to: Depot
Offering a casual, prompt and lively vibe that diners far and wide are known to stream in for, the pace at which this beloved spot operates makes it perfect for a pre-show dalliance.

Bruce Mason Centre
Go to: Madame Woo
Serving up a sizzling selection of delicious Sui Mai, tiger prawn dumplings and the famous hawker rolls, the only thing you need to do when swooping in before your gig at the Bruce Mason Centre is to leave enough time for a coconut sago pudding.

Q Theatre
Go to: Gemmayze St
If you’re gracing a theatre in and around the top of Queen Street, don’t overlook your K’ Road options. We’ll take any chance we can get to visit Saint Kevin’s Arcade’s ever-popular Gemmayze Street restaurant. Nothing less that sophisticated Lebanese food at its finest.
