This cute caravan is bringing modern Māori fare to the masses.
With no shortage of drool-inducing food trucks doing the laps these days, a weekend visit to the local market for a quick bite can wind up being a rather stressful occasion. With so many delicious offerings to choose from, decision-making can be tough, and a drama that we really don’t need in our life at 9am on a Sunday morning. Thankfully, our recent discovery of Puha & Pakeha is making our next market sojourn that much simpler, as the Māori Fusion foodies are dishing up something completely fresh to the roaming feast scene.
It’s all about approachable kai, taking elements of old school Māori food and adding modern flavours — think traditional with a twist. Like the Piri Piri chicken salad that uses New Zealand’s native Horopito pepper for spice, the Aotearoa Reuben sandwich that sees hāngi-cooked pastrami, braised cabbage and slabs of cheese loaded between thick slices of grilled rēwena bread, and an abundance of manuka, kumara, kawakawa and artisan smoked fish.
Bringing the best of New Zealand to the forefront, the roaming restaurant can be found at markets across the city, with details easily found on its Facebook page. A delectably modern way to enjoy some of our country’s finest flavours and fare, don’t get caught in the all-too-common market food freakout that often ends with a disappointing bowl of greasy grey noodles, give Puha & Pakeha a whirl, it’s ka pai.
