If you ask us, chilled soup is a highly underrated summer special. A light alternative for when you just can’t stick another salad, the refreshing fare leaves you satisfied, not stuffed, and few are doing it better right now than L’affare Melrose.
A rich amalgamation of summer’s finest flavours, the Newmarket cafe’s take on the liquid lunch sees fresh watermelon, ripe tomato, basil, cucumber and jalapeño blitzed into sloshy superbness before being topped with dollops of feta crema and cucumber ribbons. Mighty refreshing with an unexpected depth of flavour and hint of spice lingering in the background, for those days when it’s hot and we’re hungry, we really couldn’t picture a finer option.
Just one of L’affare’s fresh summer menu additions, all of the new dishes follow in the gazpacho’s summer-flavoured stride with basil and mint crusted kingfish steaks in a punchy crayfish bisque; a grilled corn, feta and nectarine salad; and blackened chicken salad that comes tossed in a green goddess dressing that was inspired, we’re told, by a Woman’s Weekly recipe from the 70s.
A shining example of how to do summer produce justice, the Melrose Street spot has warm weather dining down pat. And while any of the fresh options are worthy of the drive Newmarket ways, we implore you to give the gazpacho a go. Trust us when we tell you, it’s cool.
